When PNG is the right choice for a HEIC photo
HEIC exists because Apple needed to store a 12-megapixel photo in half the space a JPG would take. It succeeded, and that is exactly why the format travels so badly: outside the Apple ecosystem, plenty of software still has no idea what to do with the file. Converting is not a downgrade, it is a compatibility decision.
Reach for PNG when the picture is going to be worked on again. PNG is lossless, so cropping it, annotating it, saving it, and reopening it a dozen times costs nothing in quality. It is the right target for a screenshot, a product shot that a designer will cut out, a document photo that will be sharpened, or anything destined for a transparent background.
Reach for JPG instead when the photo is finished and simply needs to go somewhere — email, a web form, a shared drive, a print service. A PNG of an ordinary photograph is routinely five to ten times the size of the equivalent JPG while looking identical, and that difference stops being academic the moment you are attaching thirty of them.
One thing worth knowing either way: the conversion writes fresh pixels with no metadata block attached, so GPS coordinates and camera details do not survive the trip. That is usually what you want.
