Why a WebP will not open, and what converting actually costs
Almost every WebP problem starts the same way: you right-clicked an image on a website, saved it, and now the thing that has to accept it will not. Every browser reads WebP, which is why it is now the default output of most sites, but a great deal of software outside the browser never caught up.
The usual offenders are older Photoshop and Illustrator versions, Windows apps that predate the format, print and photo-lab upload forms, some e-commerce product importers, several email clients when the image is inline, and a long tail of desktop viewers. None of those are going to be fixed on your schedule, so converting is the pragmatic move.
The cost is small but real. WebP and JPG are both lossy, so you are re-encoding rather than copying — some detail that survived the first compression will not survive the second. At quality 85 that is invisible at normal viewing size. What does accumulate is repeated round trips, so keep the WebP as your master and treat the JPG as an export.
Transparency is the one thing that cannot be negotiated. JPG has no alpha channel at all, so transparent regions have to be filled with something, and here they are filled with white. If you need the transparency, the answer is PNG or staying on WebP, not a different JPG setting.
